Aztecs Fall To Cal, 8-6, In Season Finale

LONG BEACH, Calif. - One of the best season's in San Diego State water polo history finished with a sour ending on Sunday, as the Aztecs fell to Cal, 8-6, in the fifth place match of the MPSF tournament. The Aztecs finish the tournament in sixth after going 1-2 as the No. 4 seed. Senior captains Sandy Onweller and Holly Hartzell posted two goals apiece to lead SDSU in their final collegiate contest. SDSU ends the season with a 26-9 record, the second most wins in school history after posting the most wins ever in regular season action.

The two teams battled in the first quarter and were locked at three, before the Bears went on a 3-0 run, including a score with 20 seconds left in the half, to hold a 6-3 halftime advantage. Hartzell scored the first goal in the second half to get the deficit back to only two, but Cal scored the next two goals to ice the game.

Hartzell finishes her SDSU career as the all-time leading scorer with 278 goals in four years. She is also the only Aztec to rank in the top three in career goals, assists, and steals. Hartzell and Onweller finished the season tied for scoring lead with 57 scores.

Also scoring goals against the Bears were Elana Cervantes and Savanah Kelley. Senior Ashley Zabel made eight saves in the cage.
