Three Aztec Softball Players Named to All-West Region Team

May 19, 2004

SAN DIEGO - Three San Diego State softball players were named to the NFCA all-West Region second team: sophomore pitcher Celena Velasquez (Tucson, Ariz.), senior center fielder Janna Kovensky (San Diego, Calif.) and senior third baseman Kelcy Murphy (San Diego, Calif.). All three were named to the all-Mountain West Conference team last week.

Velasquez finished the 2004 campaign with a 1.39 ERA (second lowest in the Mountain West Conference), including a 0.85 ERA in MWC games (third best in league history and lowest this season). She compiled a 16-5 record (.762 winning percentage), the best on the team, and recorded five saves, all in MWC contests. She threw 27.2 consecutive scoreless innings from April 9-May 1. Velasquez earned MWC pitcher of the year honors for the second consecutive season.

Kovensky finished her senior season with a .363 batting average, .474 slugging percentage and .449 on-base percentage, along with 17 stolen bases in 17 attempts. Her .363 batting average ranked fourth in the MWC along with being the fifth highest in Aztec history. She finished her career ranked in the top five in 12 Aztec career record charts, including first on three and second on five others.

Murphy drove in 35 runners this season, 12 more than any other Aztec and the third most in Aztec history. Her 102 career RBI tied for the most in Aztec history. The senior hit at a .317 clip and compiled a .457 slugging percentage, while hitting nine doubles and a team-leading four homers.

As a team, the 2004 Aztecs recorded their fourth straight season with a winning percentage greater than .600 (.617, 37-23 mark) after only twice surpassing .500 in the 24 years of SDSU softball prior to 2001.
