SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's track & field squad finds itself in third place overall heading into final day of the Mountain West Conference championships in Las Vegas, Nev. The 17th-ranked and defending champion Aztecs have 45 team points through seven events and trail both No. 18 BYU (93 pts.) and No. 20 Colorado State (53 points) Friday at UNLV's Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr Smith Field
San Diego native Erin Asay (Sweetwater HS) posted the team's top finish of the day, coming in second in the pole vault by clearing 12-03.50. Asay was helped in the event by junior Shayla Balentine (Los Osos, Calif.), who finished fourth (12-03.50), and freshman Cara Walker (Huntington Beach, Calif.), who took fifth (11-11.75).
Senior Candace Hill (San Diego, Calif.) had one of SDSU's two, third-place performances on the day, coming in third with a season-best throw of 159-08 in the discus. Newcomer Marie Nilsson (Kil, Sweden) also ran the third-fastest time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase of 10:43.66.
A day removed title in the heptathlon, freshman Janine Polischuk (Regina, Saskatchewan) was sixth in the long jump (18-07) and seventh in the javelin (132-10).
In the track events, the Aztecs qualified at least three competitors for Saturday's finals in six different events.
The 2004 Mountain West Conference Track & Field Championships conclude Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. (track events) and 9 a.m. (field events), respectively.
