San Diego State continued its dominance in the Mountain West Conference heptathlon, as freshman Janine Polischuk (Regina, Saskatchewan) pulled off a dramatic performance in the final event to finish first overall Thursday with a personal best point total of 5,210 in Las Vegas, Nev. Polischuk becomes the third different Aztec to win the MWC heptathlon in the last four seasons.
Polischuk trailed BYU's Anna-Lee Walcott by 58 points heading into the seventh and final event, the 800 meters. Polischuk needed to beat Walcott, who won the heptathlon at the inaugural MWC meet in 2000, by 4.5 seconds or more to secure the title.
Polischuk easily accomplished the feat, posting a personal best time of 2:16.25 to Walcott's 2:26.58, to win the heptathlon by the closest margin in MWC history (16 points) over UNLV's Christine Spence (5,194 pts.), who passed up Walcott with the day's best 800-meter time.
Polischuk was fourth overall after four events Wednesday, but came back with a first place in the long jump (18-8), a fourth in the javelin (116-03) and a third in the 800. Her 5,210 points rank sixth in school history and is 24th-best in the NCAA in 2004.
SDSU also had two other entrants in the heptathlon as sophomore Jamillah Titus (American Canyon, Calif.) placed ninth with 4,321 points and sophomore Nicole Carmier (Elk Grove, Calif.) finished 14th with 3,964 points at UNLV's Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr Smith Field.
Polischuk's first place gave the 17th-ranked Aztecs 10 points overall, just one point behind Brigham Young, which finished third and fourth in the heptathlon for 11 points.
The 2004 Mountain West Conference Track & Field Championships continue with day three action Friday, beginning at 8 a.m. (track events) and 10 a.m. (field events), respectively.
