LONG BEACH, Calif. - San Diego State fell in the quarterfinals of the MPSF tournament to host Long Beach State, 9-6, on Friday evening. The Aztecs fell behind 4-1 after halftime and never were within striking distance. Sandy Onweller led five Aztec scorers with two goals. The loss ends SDSU's chances at the MPSF championship, but will continue play to determine its conference finish. The fourth-seeded Aztecs (25-8) will face ninth-seeded UC Santa Barbara (15-15) at 1:30 pm on Saturday at the Los Alamitos Training Center.
SDSU and LBSU have switched between fourth and fifth in the country all season long and battled three times in the regular season. LBSU won the first two contests before the Aztecs won the MPSF contest at home to earn the upper-hand in the conference standings.
Onweller's two scores gives her 54 on the season to tie her with Holly Hartzell, who scored once, for the team lead. Fellow seniors Chelsy Smith and Kristin Moore, along with freshman Dominique Delgado tallied the final scores. Ashley Zabel registered four saves in the cage.
