SAN DIEGO - In an otherwise off-week for most of the SDSU women's track and field squad, a handful of Aztecs made their way across town to the UCSD Triton Invitational, earning four top-six finishes Saturday in La Jolla, Calif.
Aztec senior Nicole Ireland (Las Vegas, Nev.) posted a season best in the 400 hurdles by almost two seconds, winning the event in an NCAA regional qualifying time of 57.40. The effort beat her previous fastest time in 2004 of 59.35, which she posted at last week's Mt. SAC Relays, and stands sixth nationally this season.
Classmate Candace Hill (San Diego, Calif.) also had a season best in the discus, throwing 157-08, en-route to a 25th place in an elite field of 47 competitors.
Freshman pole vaulter Cara Walker (Huntington Beach, Calif.) cleared a season high 12-01.25 for fifth place, while Tina Fodor (Fullerton, Calif.) was sixth in the 3,000 (10:43.39) and Ireland took sixth in the 100 hurdles (14.08).
The SDSU women's track and field squad will be back to full strength next week, traveling to UC Irvine and the Steve Scott Invitational on May 2.
