LONG BEACH, Calif. - San Diego State split its two games on Sunday to finish 3-1 at the LBSU touranment over the weekend. SDSU defeated No. 16 Cal State Northridge 9-8 in overtime before falling to No. 1 USC 10-3 in the afternoon. The Aztecs were led to victory against CSUN by the three-time All-American, Holly Hartzell, as she tied a career-high with six goals. SDSU is now 23-7 on the season.
The Aztecs jumped out to a 6-3 lead over CSUN in the first match after posting a 3-0 second quarter. The Matadors responded with a 3-0 third quarter and the teams battled to an 8-8 tie at the end of regulation. Kristen Moore would post the only goal in the extra time to give SDSU the victory. The Aztecs are now 4-0 in overtime games this season.
Hartzell's six goals in the match tie her previous mark she set against Hartwick her freshman season. She also ties Sandy Onweller, who posted six goals against Hawai'i, for the most scores in a single game this season. Hartzell is SDSU's all-time leading scorer with 270 goals in her four years and the Aztecs' leading scorer this year with 49.
Also, scoring for SDSU against Northridge was Dominique Delgado and Onweller. Sara Daseler started the game in the cage and made six saves and freshman Sarah Kilgore earned the victory with three saves in the second half.
The Aztecs lost to undefeated and No. 1 USC for the second time in just over a week as the Women of Troy had too much fire power. USC jumped out to a 9-2 lead at halftime and the Aztecs couldn't mount an attack to get back into the game. Savanah Kelley scored and recorded three steals to lead SDSU. Onweller and Rachel Serna also posted scores while Ashley Zabel and Daseler split time in net.
SDSU will play its final two regular season games at home this Saturday, April 24, as they play Cal Baptist at 9 am before a rematch with Cal State Northridge at 5 pm. The Aztecs will then head to the MPSF Tournament, where they have wrapped up the No. 4 seed and a first round bye after posting an 8-3 regular season mark. The winner of the conference tournament earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
