SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's basketball coach Steve Fisher announced Thursday that Mohamed Camara has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to attend the University and play basketball.
Camara, a 6-11, 260-pound center from Louisville, Ky., is ranked as the sixth best junior college center prospect in the nation by Lindy's and nbadraft.net. Camara, who attended Riverside Community College the last two years, he averaged 9.4 points, 10.7 rebounds and connected on 51.0 percent of his field goal attempts in 2003-04. He helped lead the Tigers to a 25-7 record, their first outright Orange Empire Conference championship since 1994, and an appearance in the Southern California Regional Final game. He started all 32 games for Riverside this past season.
"We are excited about the addition of Mohamed to our basketball program and family," Fisher said. "He brings legitimate major Division I size and athletic ability to our team. He will help our post play immediately and provide us with the type of size we have not had before at that position. Equally important, he is a wonderful person."
Camara entered the 2003-04 season ranked as the third best junior college player and the top post player in California according to PrepCA.com.
In two seasons at Riverside, Camera produced some eye-popping numbers. His teams posted a 45-21 record and he compiled 568 points, 697 rebounds and 149 blocked shots. He produced single-game highs of 23 points and 23 rebounds with the Tigers.
Camara prepped at Moore High School in Louisville, where he earned all-state and all-league accolades. As a senior, he averaged 15 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocked shots a game and was named to the Blue Grass State's roster for the annual Indiana-Kentucky All-Star Game.
San Diego State will return four starters off a squad that finished 14-16 in 2003-04. The Aztecs return players that accounted for 77.1 percent of the scoring, 68.7 percent of the rebounds, 91.7 percent of the assists and 82.1 percent of the total minutes played. SDSU returns three players that earned all-league recognition last season in Wesley Stokes, Brandon Heath and Marcus Slaughter.
