COLORADO SPREINGS, COLO. - San Diego State freshman catcher Brock Ungricht and Aztec senior right-hander Scott Shoemaker have been named the Mountain West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Ungricht wins the hitting honor for the second straight week while Shoemaker picks up the league's weekly pitching award for the second time this season.
Ungricht, from San Diego, Calif. (Mission Bay HS), helped the Aztecs take two of three games from UNLV and move into a tie for first place in the league standings as he hit over .600 for the second straight week. In the series vs. the Rebels, he went 8-for-13 (.615) with four runs scored, a double, a home run, four RBI and a walk. The home run was his first as a collegiate player and came in the first game of the series. He also had an RBI single in the first inning of that contest to give SDSU a lead it would not relinquish. He finished game one 3-for-5 from the plate. In game two, he singled and scored in the first inning, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in the contest. In the final game, he was 2-for-4 with a walk, while scoring once.
Shoemaker, from San Diego, Calif. (Long Beach State/Grossmont JC/Granite Hills HS), started game one against UNLV and handed the Rebels their first league loss of the year. He went seven innings, walking none and striking out five, to pick up his fourth straight win. He allowed three hits and one earned run before leaving the game. Shoemaker has allowed three runs in his last 30 innings pitched.
San Diego State takes a short break from conference play as it travels across town to face University of San Diego on Tuesday (April 6) at 2:00 p.m. at Cunningham Stadium. The Aztecs travel to Colorado later this week, resuming league action at Air Force starting Thursday.
