SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's defense helped the squad split two matches in Tempe, Arizona on Saturday, earning a 6-5 MPSF victory over Arizona State before falling to California, 5-2, in its second game of the day. Holly Hartzell's four goals led SDSU to the win over ASU, and improves the Aztecs' record to 7-1 in conference action. The Aztecs had a six-match winning streak snapped by Cal, who the Aztecs defeated twice earlier in the season, including the conference game. SDSU is 18-4 overall and ranked No. 4 in the AWPCA poll.
Hartzell's four goals against ASU tied a season-high for the career scoring leader at SDSU. Hartzell also tallied a goal against Cal, which gives her 36 on the season. Kristin Moore and Elana Cervantes also posted scores in the ASU win, while Ashley Zabel recorded seven saves to earn the win in the cage.
The afternoon Arizona heat drained the Aztecs in the second game as they didn't have the stamina to keep up with a fresh Cal team. Sandy Onweller posted the other score for the Aztecs, while Sara Daseler made seven saves.
SDSU's six game winning streak was the second longest of the season, but also the second-longest in school history. The Aztecs won seven straight games earlier in the year to set the mark.
The Aztecs play again next Saturday, April 3, at defending national champion, No.3 UCLA in an MPSF matchup.
