No. 5 SDSU Claims UC Davis Shootout Championship

DAVIS, Calif. - San Diego State's water polo team claimed the UC Davis Shootout title after a 9-4 victory over Arizona State and a 6-3 win over UC San Diego in the championship match on Sunday. SDSU ended the tournament as the only undefeated team, finishing 4-0, after also posting two wins on Saturday. Senior Holly Hartzell added five goals in Sunday's matches to lead the Aztec offense after breaking SDSU's career scoring record on Saturday. No. 5 SDSU improves to 8-1 on the season and will host MPSF foe Hawaii on Thursday, Feb. 24 at the Kroc Community Center pool at 6 p.m.

SDSU began the day with a 9-4 win over No. 15 Arizona State in the first meeting between the two programs. The Aztecs led 4-0 at halftime and cruised to an easy win. Seven Aztecs tallied a goal with Hartzell leading the way with three, and the other six eaching posting one each. Senior Ashley Zabel and freshman Sarah Kilgore split time in the cage and posted four saves apiece to lead the defense.

The Aztecs finished the tournament with a 6-3 win over rival UC San Diego. Sandy Onweller posted a season high three goals, while Hartzell scored two goals. Ashley Zabel made seven saves to earn the win in goal.

After the matchup against Hawaii, SDSU will compete against the top teams in the country over the weekend at the UC Santa Barbara tournament.
