SAN DIEGO - Senior Holly Hartzell scored seven goals to break San Diego State's all-time scoring record and helped lead the Aztecs to victories over Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State Northridge on Saturday at the UC Davis Shootout. Hartzell tallied four scores in the Aztecs 12-3 win over CSUB, and finished the day with three goals, and the record, in a 7-3 victory over CSUN. SDSU, ranked fifth in the latest AWPCA poll, improves to 6-1 on the year and will play for a chance at the tournament title with two games on Sunday.
Hartzell entered the day with 229 goals in her three-plus seasons and in third place on the career goals list, six behind Larisa Baltgalvis (1997-00) for first place. She quickly moved into second place with three goals in the first period against CSUB to pass former team mate Amber Prestegard. Hartzell then finished the day with the record breaking goal in the fourth period after taking a pass from Kristin Moore and putting a backhand shot over the CSUN goalkeeper.
"It is a great accomplishment and I am really excited," said the three-time All-American Hartzell. "However, I am also happy that it is over now as I was getting a little stressed. I don't usually know how many goals I score or how many I need to get a record so this was a little different for me, but now I can just focus on helping the team win."
Head coach Carin Crawford said the team wasn't doing anything special to get Hartzell the record.
"The team hadn't been playing too well entering the tournament, so we were trying to focus on improvement and not doing anything special to break records," said head coach Carin Crawford. "It just came in the normal course of events and it just goes to show how amazing an offensive player she is. It was a great moment."
SDSU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead behind the offensive of Hartzell, and cruised to the 12-3 victory over CSUB. Seven Aztecs chipped in to give SDSU its highest scoring output of the season, including two goals each from Chelsy Smith and Susan Stivers.
The second game started out in similar fashion as the Aztecs claimed a 4-1 advantage and held on for the 7-3 win over Cal State Northridge. Sandy Onweller and Smith both added to goals apiece in addition to Harzell's scores.
Ashley Zabel and Sarah Kilgore split time in goal in both games. Zabel finished with five saves on the day, while Kilgore made 10 stops.
