Aztec Swimmers In Eighth Place At MWC Championships

Oklahoma City - The San Diego State swim team finds itself if eighth place after Thursday's events at the 204 Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at Oklahoma City Community College.

Brigham Young has the lead after the first full day of competition with 251 points followed closely by Colorado State at 231. The Aztecs have totaled 90 points and trail seventh-place Air Force by 16.

SDSU's top performance on the day came from freshman Caitlin Friedhoff in the 500 freestyle. She took first in the 'B' final of that event (ninth overall) in a time of 23.92. Her mark established a new personal best and was the top time on the team this season.

Senior Megan Storey also turned in SDSU's top time of the year in the 500 freestyle at 4:58.71. That mark enabled her to finish third in the 'B' Final, ahead of teammate Hannah Ryan, who was sixth in 5:03 .68.

In the day's only other race, sophomore Emily Schmied placed fifth in the 'B' Final of the 200 individual medley. He time of 2:08.98 in that event also set her personal best as an Aztec.

The 2004 conference championships continue on Friday (Feb. 20) with the first event (400 individual medley) scheduled to get underway at 10:00 a.m. (CST).
