Swimmers Split Results At Double Dual Meet In Honolulu

Honolulu - The San Diego State swim team split a pair of meets in a double dual competition held at the University of Hawai'i late Friday evening. The Aztecs defeated Stony Brook University, 120-20, but fell to host Hawai'i, 97-43. The results left SDSU with a dual meet record of 5-5 on the season, one shy of their win total of six during the 2003-04 campaign with four meets remaining.

The University of Wisconsin also competed in Honolulu, but faced only Hawai'i and Stony Brook in meet scoring.

San Diego State's top individual finishes on the day were second-place efforts by seniors Megan Story and Hannah Ryan. Storey took runner-up honors in the 1,000 freestyle in a time of 10:13.19, a personal season best. Ryan, meanwhile, finished second in the 500 freestyle in 5:00.83.She also took third in the 500 free with a mark of 1:52.94.

Sophomore Emily Schmied also had an excellent outing for the Aztecs, taking third in both the 100 butterfly (58.69) and 200 butterfly (2:06.69). Her time in the 200 fly ranks as the fifth fastest in that event in program history. She surpassed her own best time of 2:06.85 set last year, a mark that was the fifth-best for an Aztec until Friday's meet. Schmied also set a personal best in the 200 individual medley at 2:09.14.

Several other Aztecs set season personal best times during the course of the meet. Included in that group were Emily Parker in the 1,000 free (10:35.57), Caitlin Friedhoff in the 100 free (1:56.01), Megan Storey and Stella Karoly in the 200 fly (2:08.49 and 2:10.39 respectively), Allison Fernandez in the 50 free (25.66) and Stephanie Chambers in the 500 free (5:18.49).

In addition, divers Lindsey Minnich and Shannon Colvin turned in their best scores of the year in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.

Up next for the Aztecs is a dual meet at Loyola Marymount on Friday, Jan. 23 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a contest at Pepperdine the following afternoon ay noon.
