SAN DIEGO - Kathy Van Wyk, who is in her eighth season as San Diego State's head softball coach, has been named as the University's interim senior woman administrator, new athletic director Mike Bohn has announced.
Van Wyk will retain her duties as head softball coach while adding the additional administrative duties.
"Kathy brings great leadership and experience to an important position," said Bohn. "Because she is one of our head coaches, she brings a new perspective to the administrative team."
Van Wyk's duties will include overseeing the department's academic, compliance and initial eligibility for student-athletes.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity," Van Wyk said. "I want to provide as much support and help as I can to the athletic department. I've always had an interest in administration."
Under Van Wyk's direction, Aztec softball has reached new heights. San Diego State has won the Mountain West Conference regular-season title each of the past two seasons. Those championships represent the first two titles in the history of the program. She has also led State to its first-ever national ranking and its first two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In 2001, San Diego State reached the NCAA regional final. SDSU is 234-184 since she assumed the reins of the program.
"I'm still very committed to the Aztec softball program," Van Wyk added. "People may think that winning two straight league titles is an accomplishment but we want to continue to improve our program."
Van Wyk is a graduate of Cal State Fullerton, where she was a dominating softball player. She was an All-American and was awarded the Broderick Award, presented to the nation's top player.
