SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State's women's soccer team (4-5-1) tied Arizona State (6-1-2) on Friday afternoon, 1-1. The Aztecs out-shot No. 12 Arizona State, 19-14, in a tightly fought battle with the Sun Devils.

Forward Kim Castellanos tied up the match at the 86:15 mark when she settled a corner kick from midfielder Jessica Korpela five yards out and drove it past Arizona State goalkeeper Kelly Fitzgerald and into the net.

The goal was Castellanos' 35th of her career, which moved her into second place on the all-time SDSU scoring list past Catherine McGuire (1995-98). Lori LaCoursiere (1996-99) holds the school record with 52 goals.

The Aztecs controlled the ball the majority of the first half and held a 4-2 shot advantage at halftime. In the second half, even though SDSU compiled a 10-7 shot advantage, ASU controlled the action for much of the period.

ASU put the first tally on the scoreboard at the 72:24 mark when Sun Devil midfielder Brittany Cooper nailed a free kick from 30 yards out into the upper center of the net just above the fingers of leaping Aztec goalkeeper Stephanie Pearson.

SDSU turned up the offensive intensity and earned a corner kick, which set the stage for Castellanos' heroics.

After Pearson saved a point-blank shot at the 93:11 mark, SDSU took control at the end of the first overtime session, forcing Fitzgerald to make three saves in the final 1:16 of the period.

The Sun Devils turned on their offense the final five minutes of the second overtime period as they tallied four shots, but were unable to find the net. A corner kick taken by Cooper with 14 seconds left did not result in a shot.

Castellanos fired seven shots in the match (five on goal), her highest total in both categories this season. Defender Noelle Jouglet had two shots on goal.

Pearson recorded five saves and faced 14 shots in the match.

The 19 shots taken by SDSU is the most ASU has allowed in a game this season.

Arizona State came into the game ranked nationally in three polls: No. 12 by Soccer Buzz, No. 15 by Soccer Times and No. 16 by Soccer America.

San Diego State travels north to play at San Francisco at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Dons fell to 4-7-0 after falling at Sacramento State today, 4-2.
