Stockton, Calif. - The San Diego State women's swim team concluded its first action of the season on Saturday afternoon, finishing second at the UO Invitational at Pacific's Kris Kjeldsen Pool in Stockton. The Aztecs accumulated 884.50 points over the two-day event to finish behind the host school (1,164.50 points).
SDSU captured a pair of first-place finishes during the meet's second day, both coming in relay events. In the 800 freestyle relay, the team of Melissa Webb, Hannah Ryan, Stella Karoly and Caitlin Friedhoff turned in a time of 7:48.53. Then, in the final event of the afternoon, the 400 freestyle relay quartet of Emily Schmied, Sylvia DelMoral, Amy Osback and Stella Karoly won that event with a time of 3:39.48.
The Aztecs opened the day with a second place in the 200-yard medley relay as Webb, Schmied, Jill Karacozoff and Stephanie Chambers clocked a 1:53.02.
In individual events, two of SDSU's top performances were turned in by Karacozoff and Jennifer Arrow. Karacozoff placed second in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.59) while Arrow was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.54).
Over course of the two-day UOP Invitational, Aztec senior Megan Storey accounted for 61 points for her team, a total that ranked fourth among all individuals in the Division I competition. Other top point scorer for San Diego state included freshmen Stella Karoly and Caitlin Friedhoff plus senior Hannah Ryan, all of whom tied for sixth with 59 points.
The Aztecs will now have two weeks to prepare for their next meet, a dual competition against University of San Diego on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the ray & Joan Kroc Community Center at noon.
