SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team opens the fall portion of its 2003-04 schedule by playing host to the SDSU Fall Classic beginning Friday, Oct. 3 at the SDSU Courts. The three-day tournament features players from five schools competing in four singles flights and two doubles flights.

Three of the five teams represented in the Classic advanced to the 64-team NCAA Team Championship last spring and the field also features ranked singles and doubles players.

"We are excited to be hosting this traditional fall event," San Diego State head coach Peter Mattera said. "In addition to San Diego State and USD, the field also includes two high-power Eastern schools. This should be a great weekend of tennis."

Among the teams represented in the classic are Arkansas, Illinois, Pepperdine, San Diego and San Diego State.

Among the ranked players in the field are San Diego State's doubles team of junior Indra Erichsen and senior Katalina Romero. The Aztec duo are ranked 44th nationally in the preseason ITA doubles rankings and will open play on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.

The tournament begins at 9 a.m. PDT on Friday and Saturday and at 8 a.m. PDT on Sunday. Singles matches are scheduled to be played first all three days, followed by the doubles matches beginning at approximately 1 p.m. PDT.

The San Diego State women's tennis program is coming off one of the most successful seasons in school history. The Aztecs completed the 2002-03 season with a 22-6 record, ended the campaign ranked 27th nationally and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the seventh time in eight seasons and the 17th time in the 22-year history of the championship.
