SAN DIEGO - For the second consecutive year the San Diego State duo of senior Oliver Maiberger and junior Ryan Redondo advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Doubles Championship. The Aztec pair, seeded second in the championship, advanced on Friday afternoon with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Jamie Cerratani and Chris Drake of Brown.
"Well, today was the second round and we feel like we played better than yesterday," Maiberger said. "Our opponents played very well and we just hung in there. It was fun and hopefully we'll continue to better our play tomorrow as well."
The Aztec pair will face Benedikt Dorech and Reiner Neurohr of Baylor in the quarterfinal round on Saturday.
Earlier in the day, Maiberger was eliminated from the singles championship by 14th-ranked Rameez Junaid of Auburn, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6, in the quarterfinal round. The five-time All-American, who had not dropped a set in either of his first two singles matches, ends the campaign with a 30-10 record.
Both the singles and doubles championships continue through Monday in Athens, Ga.
