SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State track and field squad is in first, third, sixth and eighth place after day one of the heptathlon Wednesday at the 2003 Mountain West Conference Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. Defending champion SDSU's Leslie Miller (Humble, Texas) leads the competition after four events with 3,268 points, a personal best day-one point total, at the Great Friends of UNM Track Stadium.
Miller is joined in the top three by teammate Shanon Meyer (Hesperia, Calif.), who sits in third place, just two points out of second with 3,180, also a career-best day one point total. Aztecs Alisha Lasswell (Kilbride, Ont.) and Nicole Carmier (Elk Grove, Calif.) are sixth and eighth respectively in their first career heptathlon competition.
Miller kicked off the day by winning the 100-meter hurdles in 14.08, before taking fourth in the high jump (5-3.25) and posting runner-up finishes in both the shot put (38-7) and 200-meter dash (24.76).
Meyer, meanwhile, actually placed first in two of the four events with season-best efforts in the shot put (39-05.75) and the 200 meters (24.37). She also tied for fourth in the high jump with Miller at 5-3.25 and began the competition with the fourth-fastest time of the day in the 100 hurdles of 15.13.
A runner-up finish in the high jump highlighted the day for Lasswell, as she cleared 5-4.50, while Carmier's best performance came in the 200 meters, placing third in 25.25.
The heptathlon concludes Thursday beginning at 12:30 p.m. MDT with the final three events, the long jump, javelin and the 800 meters.
