SAN DIEGO -- Four-time All-American Oliver Maiberger recorded a singles and doubles victory as 29th-ranked San Diego State did not drop a set in defeating 42nd-ranked San Diego, 5-0, in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships at the SDSU Courts on Saturday afternoon.
The Aztecs avenged an earlier loss to the Toreros, by winning the doubles point and all 10 singles sets contested prior to the completion of the match. This marks the second straight season San Diego State, which will face 12th-ranked Washington at the SDSU Courts at noon on Sunday, has advanced to the round of 32.
"I am proud of the way we played," head coach John Nelson said. "We concentrated on playing well and everyone in our lineup performed well today. Having both city schools playing in the NCAA tournament was great for the city and speaks volumes for the quality of tennis here."
San Diego State posted a pair of 8-4 victories at number one and three doubles to take a 1-0 lead. At three, Felix Hardt and Gabe Coren were victorious, while second-ranked Maiberger and Ryan Redondo sealed the point with a win at number one.
The Aztecs went on top 2-0 with Coren defeating Michael Meschede, 6-2, 6-0, at number six singles. That was quickly followed by Aztec wins at number four by Daniel Jung, number three by Hardt and number one by Maiberger. Although Hardt clinched the win for SDSU, Maiberger's match concluded before it could be stopped, providing the final margin.
San Diego State won its season high sixth straight match and now has won 11 of its last 12. The Aztecs are 16-9 overall, while San Diego ends the campaign with a 14-10 record.
