Track & Field Finishes Out Competition At The Triton Invitational, Penn Relays

April 26, 2003

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State track and field squad recorded mix results in two different meets Saturday. The Aztecs tallied one first-place finish and placed second in four other events at the Triton Invitational at UCSD in La Jolla, Calif. Across the country, SDSU was disqualified in one event and pulled out of another due to injury at the prestigious Penn Relays.

At UCSD, the highlight of the day came in the 400-meter hurdles when Aztec senior Leslie Miller (Humble, Texas) ran a NCAA regional qualifying time of 1:00.49 to win the event. Miller also would record her fastest time of the season in the 100 hurdles, breaking the 14-second barrier with a fourth-place effort of 13.99.

Three of the Aztecs' four runner-up finishes came on the track with freshman Shanon Meyer (Hesperia, Calif.) in the 200 meters (24.64), freshman Jamillah Titus (American Canyon, Calif.) in the 400 meters (56.54) and senior Jennifer Stakiw (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) in the 800-meter race (2:10.77). Stakiw's time in the 800 just missed the NCAA regional qualifying time of 2:10.30.

Sophomore Shayla Balentine (Los Osos, Calif.) returned to competition after a one-week hiatus for the Aztecs, tying for second in the pole vault by clearing an NCAA regional qualifying height of 12-06.75.

At the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., the Aztec women were slated to run in a pair of championship finals in both the 4x200 and 4x400-meter relays. In the 4x200, SDSU was disqualified for running out of their zone in an event which was won by Louisiana State (1:29.78). The Aztecs, who ran the seventh fastest qualifying time, were then forced to pull out of the 4x400 due to injury.

San Diego State will stay in California for next Saturday's (May 3) Steve Scott Invitational, hosted by UC Irvine, beginning at 10 a.m. in Irvine, Calif.
