SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's track and field team tallied four, top-five finishes Friday at the 60th Annual Coca-Cola Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla. The Aztecs also recorded one school record and six NCAA regional qualifying marks/times at the prestigious meet, held at the Percy Beard Track and Field Complex.
Aztec Nicole Ireland (Las Vegas, Nev.) competing in four events on the day, won her heat of the 200 meters, coming in fourth overall with an NCAA regional qualifying time of 23.66. The junior's time in the 200 also moved her into fourth on the SDSU all-time top 10 list.
Ireland later teamed with seniors Melinda Smedley (Stockton, Calif.) and Jini Hogg (San Francisco, Calif.) and junior Tonette Dyer (Shreveport, La.) to run the school's fastest-ever 4x200-meter relay, finishing fourth overall in 1:34.97. The time beat the previous Aztec record of 1:35.74, set by Angela Clemmons, Camille Brewer, Brigitte Moon and Renee Ross in 1984.
SDSU's other top-five finishes came in the jumping events, with sophomore Megan Schauermann (Vancouver, Wash.) placing second in the triple jump with a leap of 39-05.00 and classmate Lisa Smith (La Mirada, Calif.) taking third in the long jump (18-07.00).
Besides Ireland's effort in the 200 meters, five other Aztecs came away with NCAA regional qualifying times. Dyer ran a season-best 54.74 in the 400 meters and Smedley recorded a time of 23.96 in the 200-meter race. Multi-event performers freshman Shanon Meyer (Hesperia, Calif.) and senior Leslie Miller (Humble, Texas) both qualified for the regional in the 400-meter hurdles, with Meyer finishing in a season-best 1:00.99 and Miller coming in almost right behind her in 1:01.30.
Aztec senior Candace Hill (San Diego, Calif.) rounded out the NCAA regional qualifiers with a sixth-place throw of 45-10.00 in the discus.
SDSU wraps up the competition in Florida on Saturday with three relay events and the invitational division of both the discus and pole vault.
