SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State senior Oliver Maiberger and junior Ryan Redondo are the top-ranked doubles team according to the ITA's Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings released Wednesday.
The top-ranked duo, which has won nine consecutive matches and is 12-3 in dual action this season, marks the first time that San Diego State has had the number one ranked singles player or doubles team in school history. Maiberger and Redondo are 21-6 overall and 11-6 against ranked competition.
Other moves in the men's rankings include the team jumping from No. 37 last week to No. 34 this week. In singles, Maiberger moved from 53rd to 32nd and he is joined in the ratings by freshman Daniel Jung who reentered the rankings this week at No. 106.
The men's team, 8-8 overall, is in action today (Wednesday) when the Aztecs play host to 47th-ranked Harvard. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m. at the SDSU Courts.
Despite a week where the Aztec women's tennis team went 4-0 and ran its winning streak to eight matches, the polls were unkind to SDSU. In the team rankings, San Diego State fell from 30th to 32nd. In doubles rankings, the duo of senior Silvia Tornier and sophomore Indra Erichsen dropped one position from 42nd to 43rd.
The San Diego State women's team, 13-3 overall and 2-0 in Mountain West Conference play, travels to Las Vegas for three matches in three days beginning on Friday with a match against 24th-ranked UNLV.
