SAN DIEGO - Four eights from the San Diego State women's crew team will compete in the 30th annual San Diego Crew Classic April 5-6 on Crown Point Shores in Mission Bay.
The varsity eight will compete against the country's top schools in the prestigious Jessop-Whittier Cup on Saturday at 8:20 a.m. The 14-team field includes four schools that placed in the top eight at last year's NCAA championships, including national champion University of Washington.
The second varsity eight will compete in the JV event, which is also comprised of numerous top teams including Humboldt University, Cal and Washington State. The Aztec lightweight squad, which is ranked 10th in the USRowing preseason poll, will face off against last year's national runner-up Wisconsin, as well as three teams that finished in the top ten in the nation last year at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The first-year rowers will compete in a deep collegiate novice field comprised of squads from UC Davis, Washington and UCLA.
The preliminary races begin Saturday morning, with finals on Saturday afternoon and Sunday for teams that advance through the heats. On Sunday, the team will host an alumni tent with food and drinks so fans can picnic while watching the races.
