SAN DIEGO - In its first of two home meets this season, the San Diego State women's track and field squad combined to win six events Saturday at the 2003 Aztec Classic at the SDSU Sports Deck.

Aztec junior Candace Hill (San Diego, Calif.) came away as the big winner of the day, claiming half of the team's first-place finishes with victories in the discus (149-00.00), shot put (47-04.50) and the hammer (147-11.00). Her throw in the shot put was an NCAA regional qualifying mark and a career best, moving her up in the school's top 10 by two spots to fourth all-time. Hill's mark in the hammer was also more than two feet past her previous career best of 145-03.00.

For the second time this year, SDSU junior Tonette Dyer (Shreveport, La.) swept both the 100 and 200 meters. Dyer beat out 37 competitors in the 200, finishing with a season-best time of 24.07. The All-American then edged former Aztec standout and school record-holder Miesha McKelvy in the 100 meters, crossing the line in 11.74, just 0.02 ahead of McKelvy.

The other Aztec event title went to Nicole Ireland (Las Vegas, Nev.) in the triple jump. The junior beat out two of her teammates with a leap of 39-02.25, eighth-best in school history, and also qualified for the NCAA regional meet with a time of 59.24 in the 400 hurdles.

Second-place finishes also went to Lisa Smith (La Mirada, Calif.) in the triple jump (38-06.00), Leslie Miller (Humble, Texas) in the javelin (133-07.00), Alisha Lasswell (Kilbride, Ont.) in the high jump (5-04.00), Shayla Balentine (Los Osos, Calif.) and Jesika Englebretson (Salinas, Calif.) in the pole vault (12-08.25) and the NCAA regional qualifying 4x400-meter relay (3:45.08).

SDSU will be back in action when it travels to the University of Florida for the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., March 28-29.
