SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State football team will begin its first preparations for the 2003 season when it opens spring practice sessions on Monday. The spring will be highlighted by scrimmages on March 22nd and March 28th.
The Aztecs return 17 starters and 46 lettermen from last year's team that went 4-3 in the Mountain West Conference and 4-9 overall. San Diego State finished third in the league race after being picked for last. The Aztecs also sported the nation?s fifth-ranked passing offense in 2002 and will return trigger man Adam Hall. Another headliner returning is first-team all-Mountain West linebacker Kirk Morrison.
"We laid the foundation for our program in the first year," head coach Tom Craft said on the eve of his second spring as the San Diego State head coach. "We will take a look at our running game because I think we have the skill and experience to show dramatic improvement in that area. We also want to continue to develop our depth and we are anxious to see Matt Dlugolecki in our system."
Dlugolecki is listed second on the depth chart behind Hall at quarterback. He is a transfer from Illinois and was a highly recruited California prepster.
San Diego State faces a 12-game schedule in 2003, including road trips to UCLA and to Columbus to take on defending national champion Ohio State.
All of the workouts will take place at the SDSU practice complex at 55th and Montezuma and are open to the public and the media.
