Aztec Sprinter Tonette Dyer Comes Up Short At The NCAA Championships

March 14, 2003

SAN DIEGO - In her first trip to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, Aztec junior Tonette Dyer (Shreveport, La.) failed in her bid to advance to the finals of the 400 meters, recording a preliminary time of 56.02 Friday at the Randall Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark.

Dyer, who qualified for the championships with a school-record time of 53.51, placed 18th overall and last in her heat. None of Dyer's competitiors in heat No. 5 qualified for finals, which is comprised of eight sprinters. South Carolina's Miki Barber led the field in the preliminaries with a Tyson track record of 51.92.

Despite the shortfall, Dyer became the first SDSU athlete to compete in the indoor national championship since Felicia Stone in 2000.

The SDSU women's track and field squad will play host to its first meet of the season next Saturday, March 22, at the SDSU Sports Deck.
