SAN DIEGO - After the first full day of competition, the San Diego State track and field team slipped from first to third place Friday at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Aztecs have 38 points overall after six scored events, trailing second-place Colorado State (45 pts.) and first place Brigham Young (61.50 pts.).
"There weren't really any surprises as far as our team was concerned today," said Aztec assistant coach Jennifer Nanista. "Everyone just stepped up, especially the freshmen and sophomores, and did their jobs, putting us in a really good position for tomorrow's finals."
Five event finals were contested Friday, with the Aztecs' best showing coming in the long jump competition, recording 14 of the team's 25 points on the day. Aztec freshman Shanon Meyer (Hesperia, Calif.), fresh off her fourth place in the pentathlon Thursday, took third with a leap of 18-3.75. Teammates Leslie Miller (Humble, Texas) and Megan Schauermann (Vancouver, Wash.) also finished fourth (18-2.25) and sixth (17-6.75), respectively.
SDSU sophomore Shayla Balentine (Los Osos, Calif.) was unable to defend her 2002 MWC title, after failing to record a height in the pole vault competition. Aztec senior co-captain Jesika Englebretson (Salinas, Calif.), however, did mange to score points for the team in the pole vault, placing third by clearing 11-10.75.
Other finals results for the Aztecs included a fourth-place finish by the distance medley relay in 12:59.52, while junior Candace Hill (San Diego, Calif.) came in 18th in the weight throw with a toss of 43-10.00.
In the day's preliminaries, SDSU dominated the sprint events, setting the table for a big day on Saturday. Four Aztecs qualified for the finals of the 200 meters, while SDSU will send three student-athletes each to the finals of the 60 and 400 meters.
Junior transfer Nicole Ireland (Las Vegas, Nev.) ran the fastest qualifying time in both the 200 (24.05) and 400 (55.42), while posting the third best time in the 60-meter hurdles of 8.56. Aztec All-American Tonette Dyer (Shreveport, La.) also won the preliminaries of the 60 meters with a time of 7.43.
The Aztecs wrap up competition at the Air Force Academy's Cadet Field House Saturday with final day action of the 2003 Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships, beginning at 12:30 p.m. MST.
