SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State track and field squad is in first place after day one of the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. Two Aztecs, senior Leslie Miller (Humble, Texas) and freshman Shanon Meyer (Hesperia, Calif.), finished second and fourth respectively in the pentathlon, Thursday's only event, which took place at the Air Force Academy's Cadet Field House.
With the two, top-four finishes, SDSU leads the team competition with 13 points, while New Mexico was second with 10 points, followed by Utah (6), Colorado State (5) and BYU (5). Lobo senior Keren Bentzur won the pentathlon with 3,845 points after placing second in 2001 and third in 2002.
Miller, who finished with 3,635 points, claimed first places in both of the track events for the Aztecs, winning the 800 meters with a time of 2:22.27 and the 60-meter hurdles with an effort of 8.82. Miller's 13th place in the high jump, however, ended up being the determining factor as she cleared just 4-9.75, while Bentzur won the event with a mark of 5-7.25.
Meyer finished a respectable fourth in her first indoor conference championship, recording 3,546 points overall. The freshman logged a second-place finish behind Miller in the 800 meters with a time of 2:23.28 and was in the top seven in three other events, including the long jump, which she took third with a mark of 18-2.25.
The Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships continues Friday, beginning at 1 p.m. MST. Friday's finals includes the weight throw, long jump, pole vault, 5,000 meters and distance medley relay.
