Swimmers In Eighth Place After Three Days At MWC Championships

Oklahoma City - Several San Diego State individuals set personal season bests in their events, but the team remained in eighth place after day three at the 2003 Mountain West Conference Swimming & Diving Championships being held in Oklahoma City this week.

The Aztecs garnered their most points in any single event at the met thus far when Erin Kilpatrick and Nicole Castelyn finished fourth and eighth respectively in the final of the 400 individual medley.

Kilpatrick's time of 4:28.02 in that race over seven second better than her previous best this season. Castelyn, a freshman, swam a new personal best of 4:34.75 as the duo earned 26 points for San Diego State.

Elsewhere, freshman Emily Schmied finished fourth in the "B" final (12th overall) of the 100 butterfly in 58.04 while teammate Danielle Kahn went 59.03 to finish in the same position in the 100 backstroke. Both swimmers set personal season bests in their event.

In the 200 breaststroke, Jennifer Graham (1:05.38) edged fellow Aztec Jill Karacozoff (1:05.39) for first in the "B" final (ninth overall). Each set a season best time and gained 16 points for the team's scoring total.

In addition, Hannah Ryan knocked three seconds off her previous best time of the season in the 200 freestyle to finish third in the consolation final (11th overall) at 1:52.74.

The final seven events of the 2003 MWC Championships will take place on Saturday (Feb. 22) beginning at 10:00 a.m. (CST).
