WAHIAWA, Hawaii - Junior Mark Warman (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) holds the first-round lead at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Leilehua Golf Course in Wahiawa, Hawaii. Warman's 5-under 67 paced a San Diego State team that stands fourth after day one of the 54-hole event at 4-under 284.
The Aztecs, who captured the Burns title last season, stand four shots back of first-round leader Arizona, which placed all four counting scores among the top 13 individuals in shooting an 8-under 280. Southern Methodist and New Mexico are one shot back at 281.
Warman's 67, which included a 33 on the back nine, matched the best 18 holes of his collegiate career first achieved in the first round of last year's NCAA Championships. He is one shot ahead of Cal's Peter Tomasulo (68). Senior John Lepak (La Habra Heights, Calif./Los Altos HS) joined Warman in the top 20 with a 1-under 71 that has him grouped with 12 other players in a tie for 20th.
Senior John Lieber (San Diego, Calif./Grossmont HS), the defending champion of the event and a wire-to-wire lead with a 9-under 207 total last year, is among the next group tied for 33rd at even-par 72. Sophomore Aaron Choi (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) and senior Lars Johansson (Karlskrona, Sweden/Champansholam HS) round out the Aztec lineup in a tie for 50th place at 74.
Play resumes tomorrow at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate with a 7:30 a.m. HST shotgun start for the second round.
