Long Beacg - San Diego State moved up two places to 11th (of 21 teams) at the annual Speedo Cup being held in Long Beach this weekend. Pacific (934 points) competition with the Aztecs moving up from their first-day spot of 13th with a total of 244 points. The only other Mountain West Conference team at the meet, Brigham Young, was in 12th place, just behind SDSU with 236.5 points.
Erin Kilpatrick turned in her second top 10 finish of the meet with a seventh-place in the 400 individual medley. Her time of 4:35.29 is her best of the year, eclipsing her previous top time this season by over four seconds.
Freshman Emily Schmied also had another strong day, scoring points in two events. She placed 11th in the 100 butterfly (58.10) and 16th in the 200 freestyle (1:56.00). Both times represented personal season bests for the first-year Aztec.
In addition, Aztec foursomes in the 200 medley relay (1:51.30) and the 800 freestyle relay (7:41.56) also set SDSU season bests. The 800 free relay squad bettered its previous mark by some 14 seconds.
San Diego State continues action during the third and final day of the Speedo Cup on Saturday (Dec. 7). The teamm will then have a four-week break with its next meet, The UC Irvine Invitational, scheduled for Jan. 4th and 5th in Irvine.
