Women's Soccer Tops UNLV, 2-1

Nov. 6, 2002

PROVO, Utah - Under the bright lights of South Field in 40-degree weather on the campus of Brigham Young University, the San Diego State women's soccer team defeated UNLV, 2-1, to advance to the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference tournament.

Despite the Aztecs out-shooting the Rebels 11-6 in the first 45 minutes, the game was scoreless entering the second half. Nearly 60 minutes into the match, senior Shawni Flint headed in a goal off an assist from senior Arinda Alvarez, who was named to the Mountain West all-conference first team on Tuesday. UNLV answered two minutes later, as sophomore Annii Magliulo knocked in a goal off a goalkeeper rebound.

With just under a minute and a half remaining in the game and the score tied at 1-1, the match seemed bound for overtime. At 1:22, Alvarez was fouled and SDSU earned a penalty kick. Despite having missed two penalty kick opportunities in the regular season, head coach Chuck Clegg opted for junior Kim Castellanos, also a 2002 first-team all-conference selection, to take the shot.

"The penalty kick was well-earned," said Clegg. "I went on gut instinct to let Kim take it. It wasn't according to what logic said, but I just went on my gut feeling. And with the game on the line, Kim wanted it."

Clegg added that despite not being able to capitalize on the shots early in the game, the team improved in the second half.

"Late in the game we really responded and played well," he said.

The Aztecs face No. 22 BYU in the semifinals Thursday at 7 p.m.
