SDSU's Maiberger and Jung to Meet in Omni Regional Semifinal

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's Oliver Maiberger and Daniel Jung will meet Saturday in the semifinal round of the 2002 Omni Hotel Western Regional Championship in Las Vegas.

The Aztecs enjoyed another strong day, placing three players in the quarterfinal round before Maiberger, the tournament's top-seed, defeated his teammate Ryan Redondo to advance to the Saturday's semifinal round.

Maiberger has yet to drop a set, losing just 11 games in his first six sets of the tournament before disposing of Redondo 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinal round. Jung, the tournament's 12th-seed, advanced to the semis with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over 11th-seeded Urban Ljubic of Denver.

The Aztecs fourth member of the round of 16 was ninth-seeded Valentino Pest. However, Pest could not make it a trio of SDSU players in the quarterfinals, dropping a a 6-3, 6-2 match to seventh-seeded Bart Scott of New Mexico.

In doubles action, the Aztec duo of Maiberger and Redondo lost in the quarterfinal round to the New Mexico team of Brent Salazar and Ryan Stotland, 8-3. San Diego State's Felix Hardt and Pest, seeded third, advanced to the semifinal round with an 8-6 victory in the semis.

The tournament continues through Saturday.
