The Mountain West Conference announced its selections for the 2002 Academic all-Conference Softball team. Aztec pitcher Breana DeSanta, first baseman Summer Ehrsam, pitcher Jessica Green, outfielder Janna Kovensky and third baseman Kelcy Murphy were among the 33 student-athletes named to the team.
DeSanta, a freshman from Scottsdale, Ariz., led the team with an 18-9 record and a 1.72 ERA. She posted 19 complete games in 26 starts and worked 214.2 innings. DeSanta is currently undeclared.
Ehrsam, a criminal justice administration major from San Diego, started 58 games during the 2002 campaign. The senior had a .139 batting average and boasts a 3.12 grade point average.
Green, a mathematics major, notched nine wins in 23 appearances this season. The sophomore from San Diego started 15 games and pitched four complete games.
Kovensky, a sophomore majoring in criminal justice administration, recorded a .317 season batting average, the second best average on the team. The San Diego native scored 37 runs to go along with 22 runs batted in during the 2002 season.
Murphy, a sophomore from San Diego, posted a team-high four home runs this season. The art major played in all 65 games this year and owned a .264 batting average.
Ehrsam, Kovensky and Murphy are two-time honorees, as Ehrsam was also selected for the team in 2000 and Kovensky and Murphy were named to the team in 2001.
To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic term at the university, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher and be a significant contributor to the team.
