SDSU Water Polo Player Honored

June 24, 2002

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State water polo player Holly Hartzell (Vista, Calif./Fallbrook High School) has been named a third team All-American by the American Water Polo Coaches Association.

Hartzell, a sophomore two-meter, started in 34 games for the Aztecs. She led the team in goals scored with 68, and assists with 20. She was the team's leading scorer in 11 of their 35 matches. She also contributed 53 steals.

Selection for the All-American teams is a voting process in which coaches from all Division I schools submit ballots for first, second and third team honors.

"Holly has established herself as a dominant two-meter player," said head coach Carin Crawford. "She was consistently our leading scorer and really gave defenders a hard time. Her strong play in center opened up our team to take outside shots. That is what the other coaches recognized."

In addition to Hartzell's All-American selection, she has been named to the Academic All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation team with a 3.27 GPA.

Last season as a freshman, Hartzell was named a second team All-American and second team All-MPSF.
