PROVO, Utah - One is good, but two is better, so thought the Aztecs with a 4-1 win over New Mexico that included two home runs at the Mountain West Conference in Provo, Utah. With the win, San Diego State (40-21-1) is the fastest team in the history of the Mountain West to reach 40 wins and are one win shy of tying last year's school record for most wins.
The Aztecs got things started when senior Kellie Nordhagen tripled to right field and was brought home with an RBI single by sophomore Janna Kovensky. Sophomore Kelcy Murphy started things as the lead off in the second inning with a home run, her fourth of the season, over the center field fence. The final two runs came off of the bat junior Amber Grahlman with a two-run homer well over the center field fence. It was Grahlman's second home run of the season, her first in the second game of the season.
The Aztecs outhit the Lobos 9-2 in the victory. Murphy led the pack with a 2-for-3 performance that included two runs and one RBI. Grahlman finished the game 1-for-2 with one run and two RBI. Kovensky went 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Summer Ehrsam, Sarah Hershman, Tiffany Goudy and Kellie Nordhagen all registered one hit.
"The first win is always a crucial one in a situation like this" said head coach Kathy Van Wyk. "We just have to keep the momentum going and play every game the way we know we can."
The Aztecs will face the winner of tomorrow's game between BYU and UNLV at 7 p.m.
