San Diego State Claims Mountain West Title

SAN DIEGO - Despite a split with conference rival UNLV today, the Aztecs clinched the Mountain West Conference title, the first of its kind in the program's 25-year history. The split brings the Aztecs' record to 39-21-1 (14-4 MWC), just one win shy of the most successful season in Aztec history and the fastest charge to 40 wins by any team in the Mountain West.

The first game belonged to the Aztecs with a 6-1 win over the Rebels at SDSU Field. State got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Amber Grahlman singled, sending Sarah Hershman home. Summer Ehrsam followed with a double to center field allowing Danielle Touhey to score.

Tiffany Goudy doubled down the left field line in the third inning sending Janna Kovensky and Joann Figueroa in for two more. The final two for SDSU were scored in the fifth. Kelcy Murphy ripped a single to center field sending Hershman and Kovensky home.

UNLV scored its first run in more than 21 innings against the Aztecs when catcher Melissa Inouye doubled to center field sending Morgan Bostwick home.

Goudy, Kovensky and Ehrsam each tallied doubles in game one. Bre DeSanta earned her 18th win of the season and extended her Mountain West undefeated streak to 9-0.

The Rebels took game two with a 2-1 effort. UNLV scored first with a run by Lisa Moses. State answered when Murphy earned an RBI with a single to center field and a run scored by Goudy.

The final run of the game was a home run by Pauline Glenn.

Jessi Green took the loss for the Aztecs dropping her record to 9-8.

Five seniors were honored in between games one and two with a ceremony that was capped off with an engagement proposal to left fielder Kellie Nordhagen by boyfriend Jason Davenport. Nordhagen said yes.

The Aztecs will now set their sights on a clean sweep of the conference that includes a Mountain West Conference Tournament Championship. The tournament will be held in Provo, Utah, May 9-11.
