BATON ROUGE, La. - San Diego State sophomore Tonette Dyer qualified for the finals in the 400-meter dash on Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The event is being held at Bernie Moore Stadium on the Louisiana State campus.
Dyer ran the event in 52.41, the ninth-best clocking of the day. That time is the best by an Aztec in that event this season, with the previous best being a 52.48 time set by Dyer in April. Thursday's time places her second all-time on the SDSU record chart. Dyer, who hails from Shreveport, La., will race in the finals of the 400 meters on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. CDT.
Also on Thursday, SDSU's Leslie Miller placed 13th in the heptathlon. The junior scored 1,995 points in day two of the seven-event competition to finish with 5,111 points.
Miller recorded a 17-0.75 mark in the long jump, a throw of 116-3 in the javelin and a time of 2:21.66 in the 800 meters.
Due to an afternoon thunderstorm, Thursday's events got underway about an hour late.
Dyer is one of three SDSU athletes scheduled to compete in the USA Track and Field Championships to be held June 20-23 in Palo Alto, Calif. She will race in the 200 and 400 meters. Freshman Shayla Balentine, who competed in the pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, will make an appearance in that same event at the USATF meet. Junior Melinda Smedley will run the 200 meters.
