COLORADO SPRINGS - The San Diego State track and field team recorded 10 top-five finishes on Friday at the McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. In all, SDSU advanced 12 athletes to Saturday's finals competition. The event is being held at the Falcon Track and Field Complex on the Air Force Academy campus.

Pacing the Aztecs was Melinda Smedley, who placed first (11.84) in the prelims of the 100-meter dash and second (24.04) in the prelims of the 200 meters. Tonette Dyer and Jini Hogg posted third- and fifth-place times, respectively, in the 200 meters. Dyer stopped the clock at 24.35 and Hogg at 24.68. Hogg also placed third (53.92) in the prelims of the 400 meters.

Three of the Aztecs' top-five finishes came courtesy of Leslie Miller, who placed fourth in the prelims of the 100 hurdles (14.44) and 400 hurdles (61.71) and fifth in the finals of the long jump (18-1.75). She was the Aztecs' only point scorer of the day. Friday's performance is part of a string of success by Miller, who won the league's heptathlon competition on Thursday.

Jennifer Stakiw placed third in the prelims of the 800 meters (2:13.40) and Ryan Peters paced Miller in the 400 hurdles, finishing fifth (61.72).

The top-eight finishers in the track prelims and the top nine places in the field prelims advance to the finals, with the top-eight places in the finals being counted in the team scores. Points are awarded on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale.

The Aztecs sit in sixth place in team scoring with 14 points. Brigham Young holds the top spot with 75 points, followed by Utah (39) and Colorado State (37).

The league championships conclude on Saturday, getting underway at 10:30 a.m. (MDT) with the women's hammer throw.
