SDSU's Miller Wins MWC Heptathlon

May 16, 2002

COLORADO SPRINGS - San Diego State junior Leslie Miller won the heptathlon competition on Thursday at the McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The event is being held at the Falcon Track and Field Complex on the Air Force Academy campus.

Miller scored 2,096 points during the second day of the event to finish with an NCAA provisional qualifying total of 5,292. That total gave her an 133-point margin over Utah senior Erianne Allen, who scored 5,159 points. Miller's score is her best in the three-year existence of the league championships. Last year she placed seventh with 4,967 points and fourth two years ago with 4,721 points.

Miller scored third-place finishes in the long jump and javelin events, leaping 18-10.75 (5.76m) in the long jump and throwing 116-0 (35.36m) in the javelin. She also finished fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.29.

This is Miller's second NCAA qualifying performance in the heptathlon this season. She scored 5,472 points at Mt. SAC in April.

Thursday's event got underway late due to lightning and rain.

Thanks to Miller's performance SDSU is in second place in team scoring with 10 points. Utah is in first with 15 points, as it had three athletes compete in the heptathlon, with New Mexico in third (7).

Competition in the other track and field events will be held Friday and Saturday. Friday's schedule gets underway at 10:30 a.m. (MDT) with the men's hammer. The first women's event is the shot put, starting at 12:30 p.m. (MDT). Admission for the final two days is $6 for adults and $3 for children.
