COLORADO SPRINGS - San Diego State junior Leslie Miller is in first place after day one of the heptathlon at the Mountain West Conference McLeodUSA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The event is being held at Falcon Track and Field Complex on the Air Force Academy campus.
Miller scored 3,196 points in the first four events, just six points short of her all-time best for a first-day performance. Her only first place finish of the day came in the 100-meter hurdles, with a clocking of 14.29.
She also scored a pair of second-place finishes. One in the shot put (39-5) and the other in the 200 meters (25.03). She finished fifth in the high jump with a mark of 5-2.25.
Miller, who finished seventh in last year's heptathlon, has two of her best events coming up on Thursday - the long jump and the 800 meters. She has set personal bests in both events this year, recording a 19-2 mark in the long jump and a time of 2:17.93 in the 800 meters.
The heptathlon continues Thursday at 11 a.m. (MDT). Competition in the other track and field events will be held Friday and Saturday.
