Aztec Softball Punishes BYU, 10-4

PROVO,Utah - The San Diego State softball team (41-21-1) stands alone as the only undefeated team in the Mountain West Conference Tournament with a 10-4 crushing over Brigham Young tonight at Gail Miller Field in Provo, Utah. The loss for the Cougars, last year's champions, from the tournament.

SDSU got things started with three runs in the first inning. Tiffany Goudy hit an RBI double to center field sending Joann Figueroa in for the score. Sophomore Kelcy Murphy doubled to left center, her ninth of the season, earning two RBI. Sarah Hershman and Goudy scored on the double.

Brigham Young scored in the bottom of the third off of a grand slam by left fielder Brook Cadiente and took a 4-3 lead, but the Aztecs weren't ready to give up quite yet.

In the top of the fifth frame Goudy doubled to right center and Murphy walked with both players advancing on a wild pitch, when catcher Amber Grahlman clutched with one out and ripped a double that resulted in two runs for the Aztecs, Murphy and Goudy scored.

Hershman reached on an error by the Cougar second baseman giving Ehrsam and Nordhagen time to run home for two. Murphy stepped to the plate again, this time for an RBI single through the righ side, with Goudy scoring the run.

Murphy finished the day with a 2-for-2 performance that included one run and three RBI. Nordhagen was 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI, Figueroa went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI and Goudy was 2-for-3 with three runs and one RBI. Ehrsam went 2-for-4 with one run. Grahlman and Hershman each hit once.

Bre DeSanta earned her 20th win of the season giving up five hits in seven innings of work.

The Aztecs will face the winner of the Colorado State/Utah game tomorrow in the championship game scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
