San Diego State Men's Tennis Defeats USD For Seventh Straight Time

April 9, 2002

SAN DIEGO - The 32nd-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team claimed its seventh consecutive victory in the city series with a 5-2 victory over 44th-ranked San Diego on Tuesday afternoon on the USD campus.

The Aztecs improved to 12-8 on the season while San Diego fell to 9-10.

"I thought the guys really competed hard today," John Nelson said. "This was a very big match for USD. At one point, we were down in every match but we were able to rally as a team and get a solid victory."

The Aztecs won the doubles point despite the third-ranked doubles team of Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo getting upset at number one. The 35th-ranked Juan Cerda and Jason Pongsrikul of USD upset the Aztec duo, 8-5. San Diego State was still able to claim the doubles point with victories by Felix Hardt and Valentino Pest at number two doubles and Travis Hasson and Gabe Coren at number three doubles.

San Diego tied the team score at one when Ted Burghardt defeated Coren, 6-0, 6-4 in number five singles. The Aztecs retook the lead following the match at number six singles when Rasmus Larsen got past Martin Linusson, 7-5, 6-2.

The Toreros once again tied the match with a victory in number two singles. USD's Juan Cerda defeated Pest, 6-3, 7-6 to tie the match at two. San Diego State went on top for good when Maiberger, ranked 19th-nationally, disposed of 107th-ranked Ricardo Rizo, 7-5, 6-4.

The Aztecs secured the team victory when Hasson rallied from one-set down to defeat Stephen Taylor at number four singles, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. It was the second consecutive year that Hasson clinched an Aztec victory over USD. San Diego State added to the final margin with a win at number three singles. Hardt defeated Jason Pongsrikul, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to give the Aztecs the 5-2 victory.

San Diego State will be back in action later this week when the Aztecs travel to Salt Lake City to play at Utah on Friday and against Brigham Young on Saturday.
