LAS VEGAS - San Diego State's Tonette Dyer set an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 200 meters and Candace Hill took first place in the discus and hammer throw on Saturday in double-dual competition with UNLV and Southern Utah at the UNLV Desert Classic held at Myron Partridge Stadium. The event was not team scored.
Dyer, who was named the Mountain West Conference's women's track athlete of the week after setting an NCAA provisional time in the 400 meters last weekend, ran the 200 meters in a second-place time of 23.41. Three other Aztecs paced the sophomore in the event, with Melinda Smedley coming in third (23.99), Jini Hogg fourth (24.52) and Hollann Givens fifth (24.70).
Dyer, Hogg and Smedley finished 3-4-5, respectively, in the 100 meters. Dyer's third-place time of 11.77 is a season best.
Hill's first-place distance of 145-3.00 (44.29m) in the hammer throw was a season best and came on the heels of a first-place 148-1.00 (45.14m) toss in the discus competition. The graduate of San Diego's Hoover High School also threw to a mark of 43-10.00 (13.36m) in the shot put, good for second place.
Shayla Balentine earned her sixth NCAA provisional mark of the year in the pole vault, winning the event with a clearance of 12-8.00 (3.86m). Tricia Gutierrez placed second 12-3.50 (3.75m).
Alisha Lasswell placed second in the high jump with a mark of 5-5.00 (1.65m).
SDSU's 4x100 relay team raced to a second-place time of 45.69.
The Aztecs return to San Diego to prepare for the All-Women Invitational to be held at the SDSU Sports Deck on Saturday, April 13.
