SDSU Softball Sweeps Again, This Time Over New Mexico

SAN DIEGO - For the second time this weekend, the San Diego State softball team swept a conference opponent, this time with 4-2 and 2-0 wins over New Mexico. The wins give the Aztecs a 38-20-1 overall record and a 12-3 lead in the Mountain West Conference.

San Diego State 4, New Mexico 2 The Lobos were the first on the board in game one with two runs in the top of the first inning when Michelle Carter knocked a two-run home run over the left field fence. The Aztecs responded with a run in the second when Amber Grahlman reached on a fielder's choice, sending Sarah Hershman home for the run. From that point, the game was all Aztecs with one run in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Danielle Touhey hit a sacrifice fly deep to right field sending Hershman home for her second run of the game. The final runs of the game came when Janna Kovensky singled up the middle sending Kellie Nordhagen home and later scored a run of her own off of a single by Hershman through the left side.

Defensively, the Aztecs turned two double plays against the Lobos. State outhit UNM 7-4 with freshman pitcher Bre DeSanta earning the win. DeSanta gave up two runs, both earned, off of four hits.

San Diego State 2, New Mexico 0 The Aztecs outhit the Lobos 7-5 in game two, but couldn't seem to score until the bottom of the sixth inning. Kelcy Murphy pulled out of her two-game slump to awaken with a single and RBI sending Tiffany Goudy home. Hershman scored again when Grahlman singled through the right side.

Bre DeSanta earned the win and moved her flawless Mountain West Conference record to 8-0 and wrapped up the weekend with four complete games.

Hershman finished the day going 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs and one RBI. Kovensky was 5-for-6 with one run, one RBI and one stolen base.

Up Next The Aztecs will say farwell to five seniors in the final appearance at SDSU Field on Saturday, May 4 at 1 p.m. when State takes on UNLV. Wins over UNLV will guarantee the conference title for the SDSU.
