San Diego State splits first day of UCSB Gaucho Invite

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. - San Diego State water polo split its first day of action at the UCSB Gaucho Invitational by defeating UC Davis 11-9 in overtime Saturday morning before losing to second-ranked UCLA 8-2 later Saturday afternoon.

Amber Prestegard scored both goals against the Bruins. Goalies Ashley Zabel and Heather Stiles recorded six saves each.

In the morning game, Holly Hartzell led the Aztecs with three goals against eleventh-ranked UC Davis, while Prestegard and Dominique Delgado both had two goals each.

Beth Merlo, Heidi Matsumoto, Donna Stivers and Katie Clark each recorded one goal against the Aggies. Stiles was credited with 12 saves in goal.

San Diego State (6-3) continues with pool play Sunday morning against either USC or Loyola Marymount. Game time is set for 9:10 a.m. at the Campus Pool.
