FRESNO, Calif. - A school record and three NCAA provisional qualifying marks were the story of the day for the San Diego State track and field team in day two of the Cal-Nevada Championships held at Warmerdam Field on the Fresno State campus on Saturday. The Aztecs finished in third place with 121 points, picking up 117 points after sitting in ninth place with just 4 points on Friday.
The school record came in the 4x100-meter relay, where the team of Ryan Peters, Tonette Dyer, Jini Hogg and Melinda Smedley raced to a second-place and NCAA provisional time of 44.77. Saturday's record time surpassed the team of Sheffield, Robinson, Moon and Ross who ran the event in 45.02 in 1985.
The Aztecs' 4x400 relay team of Hogg, Smedley, Hollann Givens and Dyer also earned an NCAA provisional mark, placing second with a time of 3:38.31. That time is a season-best and places the team third all-time on the SDSU charts.
As if Dyer's participation in the relay events wasn't enough, the sophomore set an NCAA provisional mark in the 400 meters with a season-best 53.37. She also raced to a time of 23.64 in the 200 meters, second best by an Aztec this season and just shy of the NCAA provisional mark of 23.60.
Smedley placed second in the 100 meters and third in the 200 meters with times of 11.84 and 24.23, respectively. The time in the 100 meters is a season best.
CSU Northridge won the meet, scoring 129.50 points. Fresno State placed second (123).
Next Saturday (April 6), the Aztecs will be in Las Vegas for the UNLV Invitational.
