Aztec Men's Tennis Rebounds to Rout 61st-Ranked Princeton, 6-1

March 23, 2002

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State was once again without All-America candidate Oliver Maiberger, but the 25th-ranked Aztecs did not need him on Saturday, as they defeated 61st-ranked Princeton, 6-1, at the Fairbanks Ranch Country Club.

Maiberger, who has missed the last two matches due to a viral infection, bounced back from a 4-3 upset loss to 71st-ranked Yale earlier in the week to dominate the Tigers.

"We got back to our winning ways," head coach John Nelson said. "There are so many good teams out there that you have to come ready to play everyday. Today we did that from the top to the bottom of our lineup."

The Aztecs won all three doubles matches and were victorious in the top five singles positions to improve to 8-7 overall. Princeton fell to 6-4.

Ryan Redondo, who earned Mountain West Conference player of the week honors for the Aztecs on Wednesday, continued his strong play. The sophomore teamed with Ryan Redondo to claim a 9-8 victory in number three doubles before running his singles win streak to six, with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in number three singles.

Felix Hardt, Valentino Pest, Travis Hasson and Gabe Coren all posted victories in both singles and doubles play for the Aztecs. Hardt joined Pest at number one doubles for an 8-3 win before posting a straight-set 6-3, 6-4 win in number one singles.

The Aztecs will be back in action next Friday and Saturday when San Diego State travels to Las Vegas for neutral site matches against New Mexico and Air Force.
